Renting a golf cart is a great way to get around whether you are on the course or just visiting a golf cart friendly resort or community. There is not much of a learning curve; just jump in and go! You’ll be able to zip around from place to place quickly and with all of your beach or golf gear in tow.

But, while they are fun and easy to drive, there are a few things to remember before you get behind the wheel. Follow these tips to make sure you maximize your fun during your next golf cart rental.

1.Don’t Overload the Cart

When using a golf cart, only carry the number of passengers for which you have seats. When you try to pack in more people than the golf cart can fit, there is a greater danger of someone being thrown off and injured. Also, ensure everyone keeps their arms and legs inside the cart and is seated when the cart is moving. Children should not sit on an adult’s lap unless they are very small and may fall off if they were on their own.

2.Enter and Exit Safely

Do not try to jump onto or off a moving golf cart. This is an easy way to injure yourself or even tip the cart over and injure everyone riding. Make sure the cart is at a complete stop before getting on or off. When you are getting into or out of a cart, also watch your head, as the roof is usually lower than you expect.

3.Fasten Seat Belts (if they are available)

Many golf carts designed for commuter use are equipped with seat belts. Use them whether you are driving or just riding and insist others use them as well. If there are not seat belts in your rental cart, ask everyone to hold on to the arm rails while the cart is in motion.

4.Sorry, No Kids

Even though golf carts are not as large as a vehicle and cannot reach the same speeds, you should not allow children to drive. Most rental companies insist that only licensed drivers may operate the cart. Even in a golf cart, children can cause a serious accident due to their lack of driving experience.

5.Put the Phone Down!

Distracted driving can be as dangerous in a golf cart as it is in a regular vehicle. Avoid texting or talking on your phone while you are operating the cart. Wait to adjust the radio until you are stopped, as well. You need to be very aware of your surroundings, especially when approaching crowded areas or intersections. Don’t drive intoxicated, either. One misjudged turn can result in serious injuries.

6.Carts Tip Over Easily

A golf cart is not the sturdiest vehicle. When driving up or down an incline, make sure you drive in a straight line with your foot on the accelerator or the brake at all times. Slow down when turning, and avoid sharp turns to ensure everyone’s safety. Also, use more caution in inclement weather .

7.Use Your Signals

It is not as crucial on a golf course, but, if you are driving the cart in a residential or resort area, make sure to signal your turns. Use the turn signals if the cart has them or use hand signals. You should also honk the horn when you are approaching an intersection. Golf carts are so quiet that cyclists or vehicles may not see or hear you coming. Make sure you look all around you before reversing to ensure your way is clear and safe. Also follow the posted speed limit. Regular rules of the road apply to carts just like vehicles.

8.Stay Off Sidewalks

Sidewalks are for pedestrians only. Avoid a collision by using the proper roadways where pedestrians and other vehicles can see you. Also, avoid going through grassy or muddy areas off paved roadways. Golf carts are not designed to navigate uneven terrain and can get stuck or tip over.

9.Park Safely

When you park your golf cart, always set the parking brake to make sure it doesn’t roll away or bump into anything. Even a seemingly flat surface can have a slight incline where a golf cart can pick up speed as it rolls away. You should also take the keys with you if you are leaving the cart unattended.

Enhance your next round of golf or vacation by renting a golf cart to ride around. It’s an easy way to get around quickly and in style. Just remember these simple safety precautions to ensure everyone stays safe.
